IMPORTANT: Curriculum Change - Speed Drills

Eventually we have plans to make some large changes to our current curriculum to officially bring in some more of the combative and self defence elements, whilst keeping the core traditional curriculum elements such as patterns in place. One of the changes we have always planned on making is the removal of Speed Drills as these often cause confusion with patterns, encourage students to focus more on speed rather than good techniques and do not offer any benefits in terms of development and self defence.

To simplify the curriculum we have decided to make this change now, ahead of any wider curriculum changes we make in the future. This means that students will no longer be taught, expected to perform or be graded on their speed drills. Any students who graded on May 26th will not be taught speed drills as part of their new belt curriculum and any students grading from June 30th onwards will not be expected to perform any Speed Drills during their grading, all students will receive an automatic 10 on their scoresheets for this category. The removal of the speed drills will mean that a higher standard of Pattern performance will be expected during gradings.

For anyone preparing for upcoming dan rank gradings there will also no longer be any requirement to perform speed drills during your grading. There will however be an increased focus on Patterns and you will be asked to perform these more than you would have done previously in dan rank gradings. There will also be more time spent on self defence and equipment drills in the absence of Speed Drills.

For the time being the curriculum documents in the student area/mobile app will continue to list the speed drills for each belt rank but please ignore these when practising your belt curriculum. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this change please talk to Master O'Brien or any of the other Instructors.

Wednesday 29th May

We apologise once more for the last minute cancellation of the 7pm and 8pm classes on Wednesday 29th May due to Brakenhale School site being locked up and Security taking almost two hours to arrive on site. Any one who came down hoping to attend the 7pm class and/or was booked in for the 8pm class have been recorded as attending class so your eligibility to grade will not be pushed back at all.

In September responsibility for managing all bookings at Brakenhale will transfer over to an independent company and I'm assured issues like this will be a thing of the past as there will always be a member of staff on site to assist with any issues.
